Spot of Tea

Don't let the name fool you, Spot of Tea does a lot more than tea.  In fact, I consider their breakfast one of the best in town.  It has changed quite a bit since I was first introduced to this Mobile favorite but I'm glad to say the food has stayed the same.

Monte Cristo
My all time favorite dish at Spot of Tea is the Monte Cristo sandwich. It's sourdough bread that has been dipped in eggs and stuffed with ham, turkey and three different cheeses. The entire thing is sprinkled with confectioners' sugar and served with honey mustard on the side.  It's basically a stuffed french toast.  The love the bite the honey mustard gives to the sandwich too.  It's a very complex mix of sweet, savory and sour.

You can get a number of sides with your breakfast.  I prefer the hash browns but there are other options like a red potato salad.  My brother didn't like it very much though and he's a potato salad fanatic.  There wasn't enough salt, pepper or really anything in it.  The hash browns is a totally different story.  It's not the shredded potatoes like you would think.  It's more like skillet potatoes.  I like to add onions and cheese to it as well for a buck 25 more. Last time though, the onions weren't cooked very well so I may skip that the next time around.

Eggs Cathedral
Another brunch favorite is Eggs Cathedral and each restaurant has there own version but it's basically consist of the same elements.  At Spot of Tea, the dish starts off with an english muffin then topped with a crab cake, scrambled eggs and a seafood sauce.  The crab cake is plenty big to cover the entire muffin.  I think there is just a tad too much bread crumbs in it but otherwise tasty.  The eggs could be bland if you fork up a bite without any sauce.  I really like the seafood sauce.  It's apparently made with blackened grouper and crawfish.  It's delicious and makes the dish really worth the $11.25.  I believe this sauce is also the base of their seafood bisque;l which is mighty tasty.  Eggs Cathedral is a wonderful dish if you want the full brunch experience.

Blacken chicken sandwich
My friend decided she didn't want to do the breakfast/brunch type deal and opted for a sandwich instead.  She ordered the blackened chicken sandwich with hash browns and a pickle.  I had a taste of the sandwich. The flavors was really good but the chicken itself was a bit dry. It wasn't all that special for me.  I've had other sandwiches here that was better.

If you love sweet, sweet tea.. as in shweet tea - try the strawberry sweet tea.  It's delicious and would account for all of your servings of sugar for the week.

I love the outside sitting area.  It's great in the fall and with the new balcony on top, there's enough shade to be comfortable in the spring time as well.  There's also a sitting area on the other side of the street.  It's right along cathedral square, so you can enjoy the fountains and if you have kids, it would give them room to roam around.  Believe it or not, service is typically better if you do sit outside.  There is usually two servers and one bus person.  I think they just work harder all the way around.  The service on the inside is kinda spotty.  During this particular day, our server spend more time entertaining nearby tables than actually checking up on us.  I did see other "regulars" get special attention too.  That was just a bit disappointing.

Spot of Tea seems to be having a bit of an identity crisis.  The decor has been updated to this chick feel but it looks like the updates didn't make through the restaurant. Half of the table and chairs are from before and makes it look dated.  It's hard to look around and associate the kind of food you're eating and the decor.

Spot of Tea added a dinner menu earlier this year.  I haven't had a chance to go check it out, but I do have plans to try it out soon.  I will update this blog accordingly.

  1. I love Spot of Tea, but I'm wondering, what are other breakfast options in Mobile? It doesn't seem like there are very many.

  2. There are a couple of coffee shops and diners that offers breakfast in Mobile - Tiny Diny, Bama Belle, Carpe Diem, and Cream & Sugar to name a few. All are locally owned and operated. I've tried a few before I started this blog and been meaning to go back. So keep an eye out. Thanks for reading.
